Random Bits of Noise

While most our articles are related to Health, First Aid, CPR, Safety and Disaster or Emergency Survival and preparedness, there's a lot more going on in the World. This category is where we share other things: From amazing scientific advances to historical facts, from social trivia to Random Acts of Kindness (which helped inspire the category name.) We endeavor to provide the most informative OSHA and safety updates as well as deeper explanations of lifesaving skills and products, but at times both we, an our reader, need a respite - this category is our "brain-break".

    How 3-ply Procedural Masks Work

The design of the procedural masks (often referred to as “surgicalmasks) depends on the mode; usually, the masks are three-ply (three layers). This three-ply material is made up of a melt-blown polymer, most commonly polypropylene, placed between the non-woven fabric. The melt-blown material acts as the filter that stops microbes from entering or exiting the masks. The inner and outer layers are fluid resistant that stops airborne droplets from entering or exiting the user's nose and mouth. Pleats are commonly used to allow the user to expand the mask such that it covers the area from the nose to the chin. The masks are secured to the head with ear loops, head ties, or elastic straps. Typically, the normal time you can wear a mask without changing it is about 4-hours. As the melt-blown polymer becomes full, the user will have a more difficult time breathing and the user's face will become hot very quickly. Masks made of non-woven material cannot be washed, so they must be disposed of after use.

  • Elephant Stuck in Community Swimming Pool

Authorities and Emergency Personnel in Kickapoo, KS struggled through the night to free Bernard, an African Elephant who wandered into the Kickapoo Community Center after unlocking the gate at the Kickapoo Explorer's Club Petting Zoo yesterday afternoon. Bernard climbed down into the Olympic size swimming pool but was unable to find his way back to the steps to get out.  Finally, the Leavenworth County Roads and Power Department brought a crane and with the help of this elephantine elevator, they were able to tug and pull the pathetic pachyderm from his confinement to safety.

Kickapoo Community Center officials assumed that Bernard had been after a drink and didn't realize the depth of the pool when climbing in, but when Kickapoo County Sheriff Noel Tolerance asked Barnard's keeper, Prudence Tusker, about the event, she replied "Well, knowing Bernard, he probably just figgered he'd just take a dip since he brought along his trunk."

    Happy April Pools Day!

  • Time

jupiterWhile many are feeling the effects of the time Springing forward today, many, too are yearning for Spring which begins in a week.

It's mid-March and many of us are tired of winter. Compared to the rest of our solar system, we have it easy. Seasons on Earth last around 90-93 days according to NASA. As you travel away from the sun, each planet's seasons grow longer. Jupiter's seasons last around 3 years each, but that is nothing compared to Neptune's 40 years per season. A few more weeks waiting on spring seem like nothing compared to a 40-year-long winter!

Did you remember to change your batteries i, your smoke detectors, flashlights and emergency gear yesterday? If not - be sure to do so when you get home this evening!
