This category is where we share other things: From amazing scientific advances to historical facts, from social trivia to Random Acts of Kindness (which helped inspire the category name.) World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. Their website serves as the central coordinating platform for World Oceans Day, with free resources and ideas for everyone – we are luck enough to have our organization located 1/2 mile from the Pacific, but no matter where you live – to help expand the reach and impact of World Oceans Day on June 8 and year round.

This year's theme is “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet” and individuals and organizations across the planet are taking action for prevention of plastic pollution in our ocean.

Celebrating marine life, foods and plant life that inhabit our world, Oceans Day pays tribute to the vast uniqueness and intrinsic value of our relationship with these bodies. Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the planet and 97 percent of Earth's water can be found in the oceans.
Today the holiday is celebrated worldwide, promoting actions for making our oceans and planet healthier.

World Oceans Day has grown tremendously each year since The Ocean Project started coordinating it in 2002. With hundreds of partners involved, and the United Nations officially recognizing June 8 as World Oceans Day in 2008, reaching millions worldwide. What can you do? • Remembrance Day

Happy Remembrance Day...As a Memorial Salute to all those that lost their lives in the service of our Country, take a moment to remember and appreciate their efforts.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).

It is now observed in almost every state on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363). This helped ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays, though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19th in Texas; April 26th in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10th in South Carolina; and June 3rd (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

  • The World's Tallest building

Since last wee was "Fall Protection" week, we thought we'd share some tall building trivia.

You may already know that at present the Burj Khalifa completed 2010 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is presently the world's tallest building at a whopping 2,717 feet, but not so long ago there were several other "world's tallest... these days, it seems to be a fast-paced race for highest and most dramatic...

No so, always... one building held the record for 238 years!

The Lincoln Cathedral (officially the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln) was consecrated on this day in 1092. Located in Lincoln, England, the massive structure serves as the seat of the Bishop of Lincoln and was known to be the tallest building in the world for 238 years. The cathedral lost a good portion of its height when the central spire collapsed in 1549 and was not rebuilt. While it can no longer be boasted as the tallest,

it is impressively one of the very few English cathedrals that was built from the rock it is standing on. In fact, it owns the quarry! Stonemasons use over 100 tonnes of stone every year for repairs. A lot of work goes in to maintaining a 900-year-old building!

  • Condiments (#CincoDeMayo)

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's Mayonnaise was manufactured in England. (While sold on the East Coast in USA as Hellman’s, on the West Coast, it is better known as Best Foods.)

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York .

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico ... But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5 and is known, of course, as - Sinko De Mayo.
