As El Niño Storms Pummel California, Legislator Proposes Tax Break on Disaster Preparedness Items

phone-with-tornado-alertFlood, Hurricane, and even Tornado Alerts are lighting up cell phones across California.

Despite the normal jokes about politicians and government, we like what one Politico did this week in response:

Republican Assemblywoman Young Kim, of Fullerton, CA introduced a bill Monday that would create a weekend-long sales tax holiday on disaster preparedness items such as flashlights, radios, first aid kits, water purification systems and portable generators.

As storms created by El Niño pound the state with storms this week, this Southern California lawmaker is looking to give residents an incentive to stock up and be better prepared for emergencies. (learn more about Survival Preparedness!)

(FYI:  El Niño is the warm water around the equator. This warm water is what causes storms in the Pacific.  What is currently “pummeling” California are the storms caused by El Niño not El Niño itself.)

While the sales tax holiday won't help out right now (It would be in effect for one weekend -- October 14-15, 2017) -- the assemblywoman said the bill will help raise awareness of the need for emergency preparedness.

Although it isn't available now in time for those looking to guard against the mudslides, debris flows or flooding that this year's El Niño could bring, it's still a brilliant idea!

When TSHTF, it is generally the lack of food or the inability to obtain it that begins the rioting as well as looting.

Aside from the air we take a breath, water is the most crucial component for human survival.

I'm reminded of my Marine Corps days, which taught me determination when it
pertains to learning and understanding methods such as survival cooking, fire production, shelter building
    and also searching.
