How to Treat Head Injuries

  • Consider anyone found unconscious or unresponsive, especially a casualty who has been in a car or bike accident or that has fallen from a ladder or other elevated surface, to have a head, neck, or spinal injury.
  • Keep the casualty lying down and calm if he/she regains consciousness.
  • Do not move the casualty, unless they are in immediate danger, until Emergency Medical Personnel arrive.
  • Call 9-1-1 or EMS immediately. Head and spinal injuries are often life-threatening and require rapid medical attention.
  • If the casualty is conscious, keep him/her calm and comfortable. Cover the casualty with blankets or clothing to provide warmth and treat for shock.
  • Control any external bleeding by applying firm pressure, being careful not to place any pressure on the neck or spine area.
  • Do not give the casualty anything to eat or drink.
  • Check to see if the casualty has an emergency medical identification card or bracelet that could suggest a cause of unconsciousness such as diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, an allergy, or hemophilia.
