Houdini was an illusionist and performer who got his start in vaudeville and became known for his daring escape acts. He got his big break in 1899 making a name for himself in the U.S. and in 1900 toured Europe with his act catching imaginations with his ability to escape handcuffs. His best known trick. the Chinese Water Torture Cell was first performed in 1913 and featured the performer suspended upside-down in a glass box full of water. His ability to hold his breath being the key to his escape. Houdini became famous worldwide and inspired many magicians and illusionists that came after him.
