Bugs: Annoying, biting, stinging, and also dangerous…

Dengue, West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease - and believe it or not... there is still risk today of bubonic plague from insect bites!

    What should you do?

Wear appropriate clothing, and apply insect repellents to keep those nasty bugs away.

The CDC has evaluated information published in peer-reviewed scientific literature and data available from EPA to identify several types of EPA-registered products that provide repellent activity sufficient to help people reduce the bites of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Products containing the following active ingredients typically provide reasonably long-lasting protection:

    • DEET (chemical name: N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide or N,N-diethyl-3-methyl-benzamide). Products containing DEET include, but are not limited to, BugX & Ben's.
    • Picaridin (KBR 3023 [Bayrepel] and icaridin outside the United States; chemical name: 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperidinecarboxylic acid 1-methylpropyl ester). Product containing picaridin includes, but is not limited to, Natrapel.

Tell those insects to buzz off:

    • Ben's Brand 30 3.4oz Pump

  • OUCH! You've Just Been Stung! What's Next?

General treatment and care for bee stings:

    • Remove the stinger carefully using a scraping motion. Use a credit card, finger nail, or other dull edge to take out the stinger without squeezing the venom sac.
    • Do not use tweezers to remove the stinger. Tweezers could squeeze the venom from the sac into the skin.
    • If the casualty has difficulty breathing and/or swelling of lips, face, or neck area, call 9-1-1 or activate EMS immediately! If the casualty has an EPI-pen, help them access and self-administer the injection (learn how with this 52 page First Aid Guide for under $1!).
