In the best case scenario, every team or individual sport practice, workout, and competition would have a professional on hand who is trained or certified to respond to sports injuries. Since that is not often the case, parents, coaches, and athletes are left to attend to sports injuries on their own. For such situations, we offer Sports First Aid information and supplies so that a person with a sports injury can receive some proper attention until competent medical care is obtained.

Two of our most important Sports First Aid Tips:

    • 1) There is no such thing as having "too many" cold packs when considering Sports Medicine.
    • 2) Get a First Aid Guide (under a buck!) and read it before you need to help someone that has been injured.

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works - they actually cause chemical changes in the brain and sometimes results in stretching and damaging of the brain cells. Concussions can also occur from a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.

Health care professionals may describe a concussion as a “mild” brain injury because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, their effects can be serious. The definition focuses on the actual injury or symptoms, not the possible consequences. For many people, there are challenges in getting an accurate diagnosis and treatment, especially when there is no documented or observed loss of consciousness. There does not need to be a loss of consciousness for a brain injury to occur.

We are now offering this free sports medicine, injury and sports first aid resource: HEADS UP Concussion Info, Resources, Videos, Training and Safety Tips check it out for great information on avoiding, recognizing and treating concussions - especially important for coaches and youth sports!
